Maybe when they can get a pre-parity patch build running. Not interested in playing HSL's butchered version of the game.

Would I have to grind, or are all the weapons/gear unlocked?

And would it work in Linux?

I'm not sure about Linux, but I do know with some tinkering other players are able to play using their Steam deck which does run on Linux. As far as having to grind? Nope! EVERYTHING that was ever in the game (including all camos) are available to everyone! IMO it's the best shooter ever made! Also just about any modern potato PC can run it since it uses Unreal Engine 3! If you join the Discord and post in #support, someone there can definitely help you get it running on Linux!👍

I get it. I was also a fan of the pre-parity version, and know a lot of players left when parity happened, but overall it still a great game IMO.
The smart people behind the revive project do have access to the pre-parity versions, but haven't found a way to make it work like it used to. If you change your mind, and would like to play with us, you know where to find us. Have a good day sir!🫡

When it was out, IMHO it was one of the worst games ever made... not due to gameplay mechanics, but the P2W/Grinding BS.

Unreal Engine 3 was such a good engine. Black Squad also used it, I played that quite a bit before it got ruined.

I spent SOOOO much real world money on BLR (more than any other game). While it wasn't pay to win it definitely required grinding if you didn't want to pay, but I started with the starter pack, and within a year they released the $100 Gold Pack which included everything in the game from the first year! Over the course of the games history I probably spent close to $1000 buying shiny items. My wife must never know this! XD

Grinding is a pay to win tactic, and is completely unacceptable IMHO. That's part of why I never played BLR much, the progression was slow and grindy... designed to be P2W. What is acceptable are strictly cosmetic items that are not tied to gambling mechanics (no "lootboxes").

Instead, I played Black Squad where guns don't have attachments (therefore they cannot be "improved" beyond the stock state - ensuring fairness for all players regardless of money spent/time spent grinding). You didn't have to grind at all to get 3 fully equipped loadouts, of your choice (naturally, me being a long range tactical kind of player I bought a DMR and sniper rifle - unlike in BLR where I'd be stuck with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stock gear that only works well in close quarters). The starter money in Black Squad was enough to buy at least 2-3 rifles and 1-2 secondary pistols to fully equip your all 3 of your loadout slots. The first 10 levels also gave more money on top of starting money. By the time the game got acquired by some other company who then proceeded to destroy the game, I basically had like almost every gun in the game, including guns I hated lol (except for skinned variants, which I only have a few of and don't really use anyway since bright flashy colors gives away my location).

I had forgotten you felt so strongly about f2p games, and now remember reading it on your Steam profile a few years ago! I promise you that BLR is now 100% free, and supported only by fans (no publisher or developer). Part of the reason BLR is so good is the millions of different gun part combinations/builds. While yes you're correct about needing to buy parts by either spending some money or grinding in the past is obviously no longer the case, but I understand your point. As far as Black Squad goes, you're correct that after the original developer sold the game to another company, they did in fact ruin it. They shot themselves in the foot first by getting rid of the Steam market, and by the time they brought it back (finding a way to monetize it), much of the playerbase decided to leave. It started out great in 2017, but is now circling the drain. At best there's only 250-300 players. That's another game I've spent TONS of money buying shiny skins, and characters!🤣

Black Squad used to run well also, but when they got taken over they turned into Black Stutter :steammocking:

The game would freeze and stutter a lot, even more so than some UE4 games.

100% Black Squad is choppy/laggy as hell if it is being run on a hard drive, and only works on a SSD solid state drive! Try moving it to SSD and see if it improves (did for me). For years it ran fine on my external 8TB game drive, but one of the updates in recent years made it unplayable on mechanical drives.

The old BLR had lootboxes unique to leveling up that contained almost anything including permanent receivers and trading was a good utilization for dupes. I myself got an AMR, snub and shotty way before i met level requirements even. Bringing back that kind of progression would be cool.
