The description of the epic card Energy Production states that it increases current talent charge when you take damage, but when Thorn active talent protects you, you still gain talent charges when hit, even though you don't take any damage.
It makes high difficulty boss fights very easy, you just spam the active talent to stack the duration of the protective shield and wait till the boss dies.
