That's odd - there were no updates to the game at all, Is there something that could have changed on your end? Driver updates, stuff like that?
The save data shouldn't have any relation to sound.
I don't suppose you changed anything on the hardware side? Like plugged in a new pair of speakers or a monitor or something similar.
Sorry that it just stopped working all of a sudden - I'm pretty confused too.

If you want to try a last-ditch fix, you can try installing OpenAL using the Windows Installer here:
https://www.openal.org/downloads/
Then after that, temporarily rename OpenAL32.dll in the game folder to something else.
It's a bit of a long shot, but it might work.
