If I recalled right, you had to bring the fire frog from the start of the level over by managing the levers. Using the rewind melody on a checkpoint lets you go back to a previous checkpoint (you can keep using it to go further back). In most instances including this, you should be able to undo far enough without having to restart the entire level.
