For the most part, paying is optional, it just gets you access to content faster. We do encourage players if they like the game to spend some money on the game from time to time, but that is purely optional.
In regards to PVP there are runes that preform better than others competitively, so if you have the skill to compete at the high tier, but don't have the runes then it may be a challenge. But, as mentioned before we have done a lot to improve the accessibility of runes.
I used to play foosball growing up but I ALWAYS PAID to enter a tournament. Most times played for free otherwise because other people wanted me on their team I was that good. Used to play two people at once solo. ;) But that is here nor high water. I'd just like to see these free to play be free to play all the way up to tourneys and then ask for money. Charging me for a handful of cards like MtG tried to do back in the 90's just has never cut it with me. Give me all the cards and charge me to play them in a tournament. :))
I know it will never happen but that's just the way I always remembered it.
