Character deleted upon system crash?

EDIT: I have 2 computers, the savegames are still there on my other computer. Phew. So I'm guessing my Steam installation on my laptop is broken or something... will have to try and re-install it. I'm considering this issue FIXED, but leaving my post here, just in case other people encounter something similar :)

Recently installed and started playing Torchlight II again, but I've now lost 2 characters, who are no longer available, because my system crashed upon loading the game. What's going on???

The first one was a new character, only in my second game (lvl. 7-8 I think), so when that dissapeared I thought it was because the new character hadn't been synced to the cloud or something... no biggy. But now it just deleted my old lvl. 43 character that I started years ago!!! A little pissed, to be honest.

Is there any way of bringing the characters back?

PS. I know, I should probably look into why my laptop keeps crashing on me :)

to the future: advice, switch off cloud saving as fast as possible, it can break saves. Check what *.restore savefile backup is exists and maybe backup.tmp too

This should kind of go without saying but when a game or program has access to a file and a crash happens, it can corrupt the file if it is using it. That's what's happening, you're loading the game, the game is accessing the file, you're crashing and the file is getting corrupted.

And no, you cannot restore corrupted files. Some times the developers of the game can do it but usually not, and the developers of this game moved on ages ago, they've started and shut down two separate companies since then.

And figuring out why your laptop is crashing might be challenging unless you're seeing an error code or have some way of picking up a clue on what's happening.
