If your playing Mods go to either mapworks or Table mountain if you have the gold & buy some Gnarly weaponry & armor at lvl 25 you can use skulls that beef up your Str, Dex Wis & vitality to stay alive. I think you would have been better off playing Vanilla through the full set of challenges & then go into Mods from there. I have 500 hours & am still playing Elite. If your not playing mods try elite with some great gear. then you can go for some real challenging stuff to learn all the bosses(which most are the easiest in the game to beat.

Man, this boss is freaking stupid. When I went through with a PB Embermage, it was okay...but then when I tried an Embermage without PB I just died over and over and over. Now I'm fighting him with an Outlander and it's even worse...I got a portal in the dungeon so I can just whittle down his health a bit before dying, respawning in town and then popping back in again...but man, this is not fun.

By the way, how long can I wait before the boss health resets?

Damage Reduction Grell-eye farming (or shared stash Limoany Skulls) is a boring solution yet helps for survival since Embermage and Outlander have no native 25% DR unlike Berserker or Engineer.

Walk into 3 other dungeons and it should reset the boss of the 4th oldest dungeon.

Or, if you have enough of the proper elemental gems (embers), you can raise your elemental resistances to be equal or greater than the ones on your pet. At the top of your pet's window, you can see what his resistances are. They go up every time you both level up. It's an easy way to gauge whether or not your resistances are too low.

Artificer and his minions are mostly doing electrical damage, right? My pet's electrical resistance, without items, is 108. My character's electrical resistance is 94 after I slapped on a few items...and yeah, I'm still dying horribly.

Yes, mostly electrical damage. It's better if your resistances are higher than your pet's if you are playing Veteran or Elite difficulty. However, it can still be done. I usually attack the pillars that rise up first, and the other adds, but they respawn. The pillars don't. I also like to have an added run speed stat on my character, from items already on the gear, or from gems I've socketed, and I keep moving fast. A few hits here, run, a few hits there, run, etc., and then I finally attack the artificer. You need a good weapon to do that, though.

Also, you can give your pet a fish to turn him into a Mimic or a Crab, and you can use spells for summoning archers and zombies. Having a high HP regeneration rate on your gear is also good. Again, either from stats already on the gear, or from gems you have socketed. I always make sure to put mana and HP regen gems on my characters, but I've stored up a lot of those, so I have easy access to them.

Huh, okay I finally beat him. I put a point into Glaive Throw (removed it earlier on) and that helped. I was still dying a ton, but at least with this skill I could live longer in between dying.

He gets easier as you continue to play other characters. Also, I forgot to mention that there is a potion for a little added Electric damage protection that you can get from the NPC lady in the first town. She has potions for each of the four elemental resistances. You might want that for a dungeon that the genie sends you to in the next desert area.

Do the elemental resistance potions wear off after you die, or does it persist?

Vanilla Potions wear out after 5 minutes.
Mods can however provide potions that last much longer.

I'm fairly sure that all potions and auras, and whatever else you had on your character, are removed when you die, so you perhaps want to have extras on hand. As steffire3 has stated the potion also has a time limit, so you'll need to use another potion if it runs out during the fight. Put them on your skill bar.

Hmm, are any of the dungeons in the Salt Barrens particularly good for grinding up exp? Think maybe I'll just try to gain a few levels before trying Luminous Arena again.

Pretty much any dungeon will help level you up faster than overworld enemies, since the dungeon enemies are higher level. There is sometimes a portal for a Netherworld dungeon that will show up. That one scales to your character's level every time you enter, up to a certain max level for dungeons in that area.

The Luminous Area is another dungeon that deals electric damage. This time in the form of a constant ping of electric damage when you are not in the protected zone. I always save the Genie's dungeons for last.
