You can also change some settings in the settings files like the maximum number of particles on the screen or enable notebook mode - but it's a decrease in quality .
If it's between 40-60 fps it should stay playable. It's if it goes down to 15-20 fps you should consider activating the harsher options

Keep in mind that the local_settings.txt file gets corrupted easily in this game, so deleting it and letting the game create a new one will fix a lot of (often seemingly unrelated) issues in this game. You will just need to put all of your settings back to what you were using before, so keep track of your preferred settings for this game, and any changes you may have made to the local_settings.txt file.
I've monitored core usuage, and the main thread is always maxed out at 99% while the others are idle so it's a engine limitation.
