Gameplay feedback
Played a couple hours of the demo, SoR4 is one of my favourite games and I think this game could have the juice but some quibbles so far.

-My main issue: where's the sauce? Do I have to play a dozen hours with just basic attacks and a skill button or is that all there is? I know from beating the first boss you pick up moves on runs but the base toolkit should be more exciting, give me an Up + Skill, Down + Skill, Side + Skill, for example. Let me do cool combos. It'll be hard to stay motivated if the start of runs are this repetitive. SoR4 has so much sauce, please. The sauce sir.

-No air dodge really hurts Galandra because of her running knee. Using it is just asking to be smacked. That and her slower skill makes her feel a lot worse than Karl rn. Also air dodges are fun.

-Add a run macro. Self explanatory.

-Also add customization for the ultimate move. My specials are on RB & RT which is awkward to press together.

-Make the throwable item indicator a little less obtrusive than a giant orb floating above our head.

-Maybe disable mounts or program them to move away from the blessings at the end of a map? Small thing but annoying to mount/unmount.

The demo is a great proof of concept for combining a brawler with a rougelite and making something new and interesting. I like the multiple paths and how the story unfolds over the course of multiple runs. There is a lot of goodness here.

Too bad that the moveset for all 3 characters is so lackluster. I've put over 140 hours into Streets of Rage 4 and still find it engaging, but after roughly 3 hours with this demo, I am already bored with the combat. What is there is pretty good, but it desperately needs more variety.

You can run by holding the dodge button and a direction

Yup, combat is super boring in this game entirely about combat. Wow I'm so excited to mash the same combo for the entire game but I spawn wind orbs and... well that's it since I can seemingly only get 1 upgrade per move. Takes far, far too long for super meter to fill for how lackluster they are too.

There is a double dodge/air dodge orb. Maybe you haven't encountered it as yet.

yeah but that just reinforces my point that the base kit is too weak / boring

I agree that the gameplay feels quite lacking in comparaison with SoR4. It takes a few hours to feel like you know everything about it. Overall the game seems to need more content. More areas (the northern continent is the obvious one), more combos, more types of enemies, more bosses (maybe instead of always fighting Rudolph when going North, there is randomness involve and either you enter Rudolph arena or the arena of a second human boss and you don't know which one it will be before you enter the zone).

Just tried the demo and I totally agree. I was a bit disapponted at the lack of moves available for the player, I expected a game based on juggle combos. But maybe it's just not for me, it was just meant to be a rouguelike game where you just go through challenging levels. It's just weird this is from SoR4 devs though...

I was replay SoR4 just yesterday and on just one guy I have
Basic combo
Back move
Air move or combo
Direction air move
Maybe a third air move
Special, move special, jump special (2 of each of these btw)
2 different star moves
And on Adam specifically his charge move is different to his combo finisher
And grab combo
And grab throw
And grab jump, which for Max has 2 more moves behind it
And grab from behind
And maybe grab special too
And down special in the air on Shiva
2 blitz moves, too
You can remove like 60% of a random dudes movelist entirely and they still have more options than you get in this

Since we are talking other games, I'd like to suggest trying Wendigo Blue by Endless Fluff. It's another sidescrolling beat em up with rouguelite elements, but the combat is much more complex than Absolum, and the combos are really good. It's still early access and it's sooooo much better than Absolum, you don't wanna miss that.

Already played it, a game with so many questionable design choices the only reason i didn't refund it is because I want to see the devs succeed.
There's also Overrider that falls into the "impressive but wow this is poorly designed" list, since the devs completey changed how the games structured like 3 times in a row, leaving it currently in a mess. Still, a single body in Overrider has more variety than any character in this.

There's also Rushing beat X coming out which has really fun movesets but the demo was far too easy,
SPark Hunt demo was also good but the devs seem radio silent.
And Dancing Diva's seems funny at least.
Sadly most brawlers seem to sit in eteran unreleased dev hell
I'm gonna have a look at the games you have suggested, I actually needed a few suggestions. Oh well, assuming these games would be released at some point...

Unfortunately mostly all we got after SoR4 and turtles somewhat revived the genre is promises of games that never come out, old 90's ips handed to terrible devs or this disappointment
