This is a well known problem with this game. Currently, once you activate the game the key becomes invalid and since the game connects to a authentication server, you are unable to activate your game. I am currently working on a way to fix this but I most likely will be unable to do so.

WARNING IF YOU MESS UP YOU COULD DO DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER'S OPERATING SYSEM OR PROGRAMS THAT YOU HAVE INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER; Just means I am not responsible for anything that happens if you delete something important like your system registries
This assumes you already have the game installed and have already gotten to the page where it asks for your serial

1. In your (windows) start menu (just press the windows key) type regedit (you need administrator perimissions to be able run the program)
   
2. In the Registry Editor, Double Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER
   
3. Then Double Click Software
   
4. Then Double Click reality pump
   
5. Then Double Click earth2160
   
6. Then Right Click serialkey and click Delete
   
7. Then Startup Earth2160 and enter in your product key when it asks you for it
   
8. Then when it gives you a choice for activation, click Activate Via Internet

Then thats it, (well you have to enter in some information but you can just use false information considering they don't check this information).

Oh, just a quick side-note, if you want to play multiplayer, the EARTHNET servers are down (or last time I checked they were down) so you have to use a VPN like Hamachi. If you would like me to make a detailed guide fo you then I will.

Doesn't work for me. Even after deleting serial key it just makes a new one with the same information. There is no "activate via internet" option. I can only confirm the "invalid" serial or exit. I even tried activating the no serial demo mode, and it doesn't accept it.

I have a feeling Steam is trying to sync some files or registry data, and it is breaking things. For example, I though normally 4:3 only was on by default, but in my registry it's off - and I've never had the game on this computer, nor have I gotten to any resolution settings.

Erm, a strange thing just happened... like fourth time I opened the game it worked, Only difference was this time I disabled fullscreen by registry, but ran the game in normal mode (not failsafe)

Theres two different serial keys, theres the registry folder, then theres the individual registry. Which one did you delete?

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ morons, they sell a game on steam but the key is invalid? And no deleting the registry folder did nothing at all. However, you can instead open the resgtry folder and one the top "Default" key you can right click > modify, then add the serial steam gave you as the "Value" of that key in the value data line > click OK ., THEN go back into the game and enter the key when prompted to get to the internet verification where you can cuss them out freely in the registration lines and it should then work.

Dammit, I should have read this first and just bought it off GOG instead probably. I'm getting the invalid key as well and the regedit didn't work.

I have used this method a couple times, I might try to make a guide so that I can explain it more in-depth. I apologize if anyone tried this and it isn't working.

If anyone still need this as well, heres a solution:
Right click on the game in your library. Under "manage" it will show you the option "product key".
