How to create a nice overview?

I know how to make an overview. It's basically a screenshot from above.

But how to make it looking nice, like the officials?
Do I need to manually draw all walls with white color in GIMP or is it somehow done automatically?

Personally what I do is take an overview picture as outlined above. Then I use Paint.NET to cut out all the black/dark parts and overlay the remaining image over the pattern used in official overviews (I'll post a link to it here later). Next, I take the entire overview image and make a faint black outline using an add-on tool. I'd explain in more detail, but right now I'm on my netbook.
