Clear intention of just milking as much as possible out of it. People need the tether when their own break. So either shove up the money for the new tether or just throw the whole headgear into the bin.
Bloody ridiculous.
... incidentally mine broke and there is barely £10 worth or materials and costs in this cable. So by my well positioned estimate that is a profit of £109.... ♥♥♥♥ yeah Valve and Steam!!
And how the hell can it be a capitalism thing if you cant actually buy a replacement? Ive been hoping this would come in stock for months! Mine still works, but theres some static snowy flickering thats very noticeable against a black backdrop like in dark areas of games or loading screens and I just want a new one. Now that I know the points of stress to look out for I can maintain a second one better, but I cant because they wont sell them.
Oh, man. That makes perfect sense. It has to be long and durable, and isn't a USB cable, so it really does warrant over 10% the cost of the whole system. Not like it's the most vulnerable part of the whole VR system that is the most susceptible to damage and in need of replacement sooner than any other part, so they get to capitalize on that demand and charge as much as they want, because without it you can't use the rest of the system.
The original cable the headset came with lasted 8 months using the questionable factory cable management which actually causes the cable to get squished every time you lift up the headstrap as Valve told you to do.
So with my first replacement cable, I tried to not do that anymore. I always paid special attention to not squish the cable, not step on it, pull on it or bend it and even tried alternative ways of routing the cable which people suggested to avoid the squishing.
And still, not even 8 months later, I get the funny randomly colored pixels again.
I anticipated this, so I actually bought two cables last time so I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of dealing with Steam support which is never fun, but becomes borderline torture when your stress resistance is pretty low.
I kind of don't want to give them another 140,--€ for something that I know will need replacement in another 8 months from now, no matter how careful I am.
