Do all souls-like games just throw bosses at you one right after another?
Forgive my ignorance and skill issue this is only my 4th souls-like. I've only played Nioh, Vampyr, Jedi Survivor (if you count it) and never played any from Fromsoft yet. I'm enjoying the game but my biggest annoyance so far is how they handle multiple phased bosses in that they're not really "multiple phaes", they're entirely two separate bosses with separate health bars that you need to defeat back to back.

I love challenge as much as the next guy but these bosses really pushes me to the brink. You need to play almost flawlessly in the first phase in order to be on equal footing for the second phase. This means conserving resources and getting really freaking good at parry. I really want to avoid using specters but with this bosses if I defeated the first phase multiple times I'm justified to use a specter to quickly reach the second phase.

Are all souls-like like this?

Lies of P has perhaps more than average two-phase bosses, but it's definitely not uncommon in other souls games either.

Are they like this though? Each on has separate health bars and when you failed you need to start again at phase one?

Usually only the bosses that are lore-wise meant to be the toughest. Lies of P definitely has more of those than is normal, in my experience.

Yep, that's plenty common.

Lies of P definitely isn't throwing bosses at you, at least not more than, say, Bloodborne or Dark Souls. This isn't Elden Ring.

Souls-likes -in the meaning it all started with Dark so.... uhm... Demon's Souls - didn't actually start with all the current "Muh nerve-wracking Bosses". Many past souls-likes (and Dark Souls itself) were more about traversing the level first.

They also were much more slower games overall, where "slow, methodical and steady" was a bit more important.

Starting from Bloodborne/DS3 the games got a huge speed-up. Meanwhile the majority of the hardcore playerbase kept screaming "moar hard, moaarr hard!".

Now many souls-likes, and the main-line games, are mostly about "multi-phase bosses that will drain people's mind and body", and it looks like this trend won't go away.

many souls-likes are also starting to receive a special "boss rush mode" as a true-endgame mode. Luckily, no achievements / special items are linked to this mode.

Only future will tell if this genre will become more and more focused to crack/adrenaline addict people or not.

These games get boss rush modes because the bosses are the best parts. Lies of P especially has completely trivial levels with bosses being the only highlight.

Damn. But yeah I'm currently at chapter 8 boss and 4 bosses has multiple phases. That's 50% so far and and it's starting to get traumatizing.

Meanwhile, many people consider Elden Ring, the most recent From Souls game, to be the easiest From Souls game to date, and it is by far the most popular, meaning it is way more than the "hardcore playerbase" that played it. You can summon strong NPCs for nearly every boss in the game, and there is so much variety in weapons, arts of war, magic, items, armor, and so on that you can find something to trivialize most anything.

But for OP, yeah its relatively common. Bosses are the main highlight of every Souls game, with dozens of them each. The harder ones having multiple phases, sometimes with separate healthbars, is pretty typical. As an extreme example, there is Sister Friede from the Dark Souls 3 DLC.

Personally, I don't see much of a, if any, difference between having all the boss phases with one healthbar vs separate. You are going through the same phases with the same amount of health either way, the visual of the health bar shouldn't matter for whether you win or lose a fight.

I am pretty sure we didn't play the same game. If LoP bosses / "boss rush mode" is the only thing that makes LoP good, then i can only say people are lost and dead inside.

Bruh, after 4 (four!) souls-likes you should've get accustomed to the idea of having bosses with multiple phases and/or health bars.

Plenty of games from the PS2/PS3 era also had these mechanic.

I'll never understand why Gamers(TM) have a morbid obsession with the word "trivial", "trivialize" and their declensions.

I never said they're the only thing that makes LoP good, I just said the bosses are the highlights.

Like I said this is only my 4th soulslike and if I remember correctly none of the 3 others i've played has back to back bosses. I remember Nioh having one at the very end but it has checkpoint after you beat the first boss.
