Just need to go hide in your building when they group up and target single horde when possible. It much much more interesting than fighting with heavy machine gun.
I even have them rush apc and destroy it. Just keep healing with medic kit .
I perfered gate as they have more hp.
I really hope they go deep on the squad RPG, I will voice one small blah its tiny though. I do hate how you can SKILL up a new squad and they come out MAXED in that skill seems a bit defeated for the guys that have been knocking down homes / scavaging and working up those skills LOL. But all good forgive teh RPG'er in me.
As game progresses, towers should transition from pistols -> shotgun -> sniper rifle. Assault rifle eats too much ammo.
Spam tiny warehouses for faster scavenging, building, repairs, plus ammo/fuel and loot drop-offs. Add a few tiny repair huts to auto-rebuild them. Defend only major warehouses in central IFZ, ignore the rest.
Rush food to cannery, be sure to use fertilizer; once food is plentiful, prioritize other tasks.
Keep some squads home to defend against raiders or clear horde-infested buildings. Assign scavenging squads separate houses in the same area for mutual support and optimal fuel-to-loot ratio.
Manually unemploy scavenging workers before "get some rest" so they're already in IFZ before sunset, otherwise they bait random hordes in to IFZ risking important buildings.
If you need to set up perimeter prior to reinforced walls/gates, use line of metal tower in close proximity, and be ready to provide backup with squads in vehicles.
Reinforced perimeter wall/gates keep out raiders and make handling triple swarms (an that other stuff that comes) much easier. I've found max 5 wall units between gates works well.
Spam barbed wire where attacks are most frequent to slow/damage incoming threats. In critical areas, use multiple rows of barbed wire. The direction matters; you ideally want incoming threats walking along the row so they're hitting as much barbed wire as possible.
If your map has streams or rivers, building perimeter wall along those gives you an extra layer of delay for incoming threats (except in winter when water freezes).
Late game I tend to have most squads with 3 assault rifles and one sniper rifle, all wearing riot gear, and in a pickup truck with heavy machine gun, fuel tank, turbocharger, and spikes. I put them behind walls near small warehouse to shoot at incoming threats.
I have a "slasher squad" with metal plate armor and polearm weapons specifically for clearing out the occasional horde sleeping in a building.
Regardless of enemy, you always get better results when there's multiple squads/towers attacking same target. Oh, and never underestimate the power of several vehicles with spikes driving through a swarm.
