You can also try to find a black American standardbred at the southern end of Big Valley. (They usually spawn near the trees on the snow-country side of the valley, but you may need to come back several times. There's a buckskin variant that spawns there too.) Standardbreds are classed as race horses in the game and have somewhat lesser health than other breeds.
You can also try to claim yourself one of the "seal brown" Dutch warmbloods early on by luring Pinkertons to come after you from the Blackwater side of the river. (They also ride the black Amer. standardbreds too.) The seal brown coloring pretty much looks like a black horse with some reddish highlights around the nose and underbelly. The Dutch warmbloods are considered a work horse and have mid-health and speed. I use them a lot with no issues, but then, I've played this game with all the breeds at one time or another and have only had horses die from stupid accidents.
you can get one (dark bay i think) during the braithwate quest horse flesh for dinner. there's numerous tutorial on youtube about it but basically just fed it treat until it bonded to you
some people say spam feeding and brushing and some people say to just walk the thing around?
that is life.
I bet people spent real money on horses in the 1800s and found out they were not up to their standard.
I think walking it around is, but that is pretty boring. Just don’t fast travel and ride it place to place while exploring and traveling, and it levels up pretty quickly.
Don’t sprint with it unless needed,
complement the horse,
brush the horse,
then feed it,
it will level up pretty quickly from just exploring and traveling, if you do this.
I am assuming story mode, I don’t know if there is a difference between story and online to clarify.
