About modding and warfare

The game currently does not have official mod support. The devs do not rule this out, but if they implement it, it'll happen only when they are done with active development themselves, and right now they still have a roadmap til at least the end of the year.
So it's not a definite yes, but a maybe for in the future.

The reasons for this given by the devs:

1. implementing mod support isn't done in 1-2-3. It takes time. It also complicates their ongoing development to a high degree.
Mod support in UE4 isn't impossible and it was never claimed that it was. But it isn't super easy like in some other engines either and it does take work. Work that they right now do not have the time to put in.

Yes, games like Bellwright do have mod support, but it uses UE5 instead of UE4, and is still in EA. They have envisioned mod support in their roadmap from the beginning and had planned for it.
For MD it was never originally planned and when they set the scope of the game in the beginning, they never developped it with mod support in mind. That alone makes a big difference in how hard implementing it will be.

2. They are a small team and do not want to deal with the inevitable bug reports that they would have to spend time investigating only to find out it was caused by mods, while they are still busy sorting out bugs in their own game.



Please refrain from using external programs like WeMod or savegame editors yourself, as they can cause problems later on in your save, especially when the game gets updated. We had countless reports of savegames being ruined that way.
The ingame customisation setting (also available on an existing save) has a lot of ways to adjust the game to your liking.

If you do decide to use an external program and experience a bug, please let us know what program/editor you used and what values you changed in your bug report.



Warfare and raids

As of now there are no plans to add raids or warfare to the game. MD was never orginally meant to be a combat focused game and the current pathfinding AI wouldn't be able to cope with raids.
While there are bandits in the game you can run into and attack, the game focuses more on peaceful settlement building.
It's unlikely to change direction after 5 years.
