I'm fine with using the pad for turning, though I prefer joysticks. It's all the paddle boating that I don't like. I haven't been able to get the boat to turn reliably or control it well. Any hints on getting the boat to go where you want to? If I could just walk everywhere instead of canoing this would be a much better game.

The paddling controls just like in real life, so if you want to go straight, you'll need to alternate where you plunge it in the water. you don't have to make exagerated movements though, it even works when keeping your controllers close to each other. As for the boat parts: the latter half of the game is entirely on foot :)
