MW2 "Steam must be running to play this game" TRIED EVERYTHING

Hello, I just reinstalled whole my computer new Windows and everything, and now .. I cant play MW2 anymore.. I have reinstalled both MW2 and Steam like 4 times today, and I dont run the game from a shortcut or anything like that, I run it from STEAM - from the program.
And still i get this message " Steam must be running to play this game".
I also deleted .BLOB file everyone talking about, rebootx200times.
Nothing works.
Nothing works.
And I did buy this game from steam STORE, if thats matter I dont know.

I have google'd whole day and I havnt found any working suggesions. And I dont want to hear any " GO ASK IW ". Because this is not thier fault. Its a steambug.

Help me.. Dont ignore this.. 'cus if you are then i want my money back because i dont pay for ♥♥♥♥ i cant use.

Also I have verified the files like 5 times aswell, and it download something but then its the same problem all over again.

Found a solution, it was as simple as running steam as admin..

I feel so pro at computing atm

I have the same problem as you. Running it as admin didnt work.

I found that running a non-steam game before a steam one can do this to multiple games (at times). This happened to me on MW2 and BO2. Restarting normally fixes that. Pilsner, this might help you but OP had another problem which he fixed.

I have same kind of problem too. When i treid to start MW2 Multiplayer it says steam must be running. But i can play Spec-Ops two player online with no problem.

BECKNARGÄNGET'LinuS- so i ran steam as admin and it opened without the error but now it goes to a black screen and freezes just like my COD WAW but in the backround of mw2 i can hear the audio for the intro but black screen?

has anyone found a fix for this? It's 2018 and last post was 2014. I started with DX error but fixed that and now I have the confusing error that steam must be running to play when clearly it's running. sp works but mp is showing the error. I've verified and blah blah many times. Is this game gonna be a coaster? COD games are my nemesis.

Hi, I had this issue has well but after restarting steam everything is solved, maybe you can try that?

Make sure to close the whole application completely, using task manager.

I think I remember a problem like this and have you tried playing single player first? There was an issue back in the day to where you had to play single player first. (not the whole thing, just open it up and start it then go to main menu)

I don't know if you're still having issues with this, I know you said you found a fix and this is a post from 2020, But my buddy just had this issue and here are the steps that we used to fix it

1 - Goto the Game Library and Right click on MW2 Multiplayer
Choose Manage, Then Browse Local Files.
2 - Right click on the MW2 Application (IW4MP.exe)
3 - Choose the compatibility and Uncheck the box that says Run as administrator.
4 - Click Apply and ok.
4 - Start the game and enjoy yourself :D
